So the incubators and hoods finally come and next week, it will be commissioned. At last, no more fighting for the hoods. i like the dual tank co2 regulators. no more problems when one tank runs out of gas.

bits and ends

first pic is free ascorbic acid given to all staff today as part of their eat more fruits campaign.
second pic is the annual honours lunch treat (Korea boy and SR). this year the new postgrads also chipped in (Terror, Ad and Ed). I didnt go so no pics of food. Feedback tells me its not as good as Shangri-la. This one is at plaza market cafe.

Wii's Bday

Last week, used Mel's cam so took super long to get the pics to me. Prof was sick so bought from Begawan Solo. Some chocolate thingy. Wanted to buy another flavour but it was all heart shaped because of Mother's day celebration. Prof had to cut the cake for him - else it would be minced cake.

fridge cleanup

cleaned up one 4C and shifted a -20 to thaw out the ice.

Did an online test to measure how fast the internet connection and downloading speeds are in the campus and came up with this. the yellow line is the connection speed compared to the commercial ones out there. hmmm....

ceiling leaking

05 was leaking so called in the workers, as usual its the piping people blaming the air cond people blaming the drainage people.
thought it was the pipe right below the air cond duct but later found out its a leaking pipe above the air cond duct. so theres this leaking pipe and the water leaks on the air cond duct and it gets all the insulation wet and that leaks on the false ceiling, and when thats soaked, it leaks down to the bench. So when the workers opened the ceiling, they were greeted with a torrent of water. hahah...
hem...so now the air cond people cant fix the duct until the pipe people fix the one above and the pipe people says there is too little space to fix the pipe because of the bloated insulation.
here we go again...
in the meantime, Ad cant do anywork because his 'prized' 'RNA corner' (insert giggles here) is under plastic wrap.
From the last pic you can see the mould already starting to grow on the air cond insulation...gross...

Boon's BD

Black Forest for her. Many ppl missing. Undergrads still at exams, prof is sick and on a 2 week MC (email her if you are concerned), DrJ at some seminar, Bhu's kid sick at home. So the rest of us get a bigger chunk of cake.
Oh yeah, we found one last piece of UKgirl's box of goodies that we did not eat the last time round. It was super sweet. Couldnt finish it.

glass

Josie asked me to go over to EM with my camera, dont know why. But i went anyway and then she ask me to take a pic of her block through the eyepiece. This was what i saw, but could not understand.


Then she explained to me that someone ask her to cut that block and halfway cutting she found that there was this chunk of glass embedded in the middle of the block, so she was angry and wanted to take a pic of it, for dont know why.


So because it was hard to see through the bino, she puts up light for me and asks me to macro in

So i macro in and you could see a little of the glass jutting out of the block. Siau fella dont know how to embed stuff properly.

new phone

Got a new phone for the next door lab, from another lab somewhere upstairs whose prof retired not too long ago.


Then my microscope tissues came, to clean the objective lenses. All the way from Japan! Hi quality tissues, sit aeroplane come one, donch pray pray ah. This stack will probably last me till the next decade or so...

new CO2 incubator

For the new designated BSLII room. One more coming soon to stack on top.

invitrogen's folly

Invitrogen last month had a promotion, just trade in your old kit box for a free sample one, no restriction number. So we sent in 9 minipreps, 2 midi, 5 maxi, 1 mammalian RNA and 3 gel elution. And the free kits really came! the mini ones were for 50 reactions, the midi 15, and the maxi 10, the gel is 50 rxn.
Dont buy Invitrogen stock this year, they are running at a loss, with people like me around...
Oh, we had to 'clear' stock and so bought many kits to store for 'rainy days', which explains the obscene number of kits we have at the moment.

lousy card

My staff card broke today. Yeah, it really broke. Cant access the lab now because some metal thing that runs through the card is snapped. Low quality cheap plastic.

Just realized, its Friday the 13th! The only thing that happened today was my plaque assay didnt turn out nice.

cheated

bought a pack of biscuits, in it there are three individually wrapped parts. One part has one less piece as compared with the other two bags. Arghh.... feel cheated!

Went for some Promega talk, and they gave everyone a beanie monkey! there's somethign about bio companies these few weeks, first the 1st Base horses, now its promega monkeys. wonder what's next.

lousy hood

After less than a month, the working top of the two new BSC hoods were terribly scratched. Yes, its supposed to be stainless steel not scratchproof steel but still, its quite ugly, B: complained and they sent two new tops to us for free. We are going to get two more hoods from them anyway.
